The Evolution of a Rustic Modernity Artpiece

Here's how one Rustic Modernity piece came to be...

The raw staves receive basic preparations that can include sanding, sealant, burning, grain filling, and progressive color and finish applications, usually water-based or a combination of oils and varnish, depending on the execution and hues I'm trying to achieve.  High grade gloss finishes give sheen, depth, and warmth while "lower "grade finishes allow brighter colors and leave a mat texture or a somewhat more opaque look.  Below is an example of the major stages of "Turning", which features a water-based, medium gloss final finish.  I sometimes insert glass or natural materials like rock in the "bunghole" some of the pieces have.  There are a number of examples on the main ARTWORK page.

Raw staves and the muse...

Grain filling.

Scratch color coats and sanding. Color re-referencing.

First finish coat with imbedded color.

"Turning" - completed in the fall of 2024

Additional color-imbedded finish and highlighting, glue down...

...and the final product.  Certainly a pleasing result, but I do like the leaves on there!
